Lake Isabelle 2009
Harold, Mark, Bill and I ventured up to Lake Isabelle with our cameras last Sunday to see how the wildflowers were doing. It’s about that time of the year for them to be at peak blossom. But after hiking 6 miles total (3 in, 3 out) and only seeing a fraction of what the hike usually yields, I’d say we were about 2 weeks early. And that makes sense to me, since we had had such a late, cold and very wet spring — I think the high country is still trying to dry out and catch up to its normal season.

Calypso Fairy Orchid
Early Season Wildflowers
On a tip from Andrea Sedlmayr at RE/MAX of Boulder, I ventured up to the top of Sugerloaf Road in Boulder Canyon on Saturday to shoot the endangered Calypso Fairy Orchid that is out in full bloom right now. What a beautiful little flower and a great opportunity! Here I used my 80-200mm lens with 12mm-, 24mm- and 36mm-extension tubes, sometimes stacked together, and a reflector to capture these gorgeous tiny flowers.
