Fetcher Barn in the Smoke

A somewhat-controlled fire broke out on the back side of Hahns Peak and we thought it would make for an excellent moonrise (94% full) on this day of camping at Steamboat Reservoir. We waited and waited for the moon to appear and according to The Photographer’s Ephemeris, we were lined up perfectly. But….. the smoke was so thick in the distance, we never saw the moon peaking over the distant horizon. Not until it was up at this height did we finally see it.

Camping at North Sterling Reservoir State Park

Spent Memorial Day weekend camping at North Sterling State Park in the NE corner of Colorado. I would highly recommend staying at this campground too. Beautiful surroundings, clean and well kept campground without all the riff-raff and noise found at Jackson Lake State Park.

We got an extra surprise Saturday night with the highly unexpected appearance of the Aurora Borealis to boot! Very faint, but check the bottom two images. Notice the movement of the lighter, cloud-like waves.

Sunrise at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal

I was feeling the urge to get outside today, so I made a quick sunrise trip to our Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. And it turned out to be just what I needed. The back/north 8-mile loop had just opened and lucky for me, the bison were grazing in their north pen, so the ONLY way to see them in good light was to drive the loop. The bison shots below were captured during the last quarter mile of that loop, but no way to get to them without traveling the 7.75 miles around.
